  • Profile Overview

The Orlando Ballet began in 1974 and has grown over the years into Central Florida’s only fully residential professional ballet company. Visitors to the Orlando Ballet can see a variety of shows that combine performing art with storytelling.

Since 2009, the company has been under the creative expertise of Artistic Director, Robert Hill. Hill is a former principal dancer with American Ballet Theater, Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, and the New York City Ballet. He has taught for American Ballet Theatre, the ABT Studio Company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, and for companies where he creates and stages his work.

Today, the Orlando Ballet performs its annual season at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. The Company includes not only dancers from the United States, but also Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Romania, and the Ukraine. The Orlando Ballet School is currently home to over 1,250 students in four locations, and has trained some of the brightest young talent in the world of dance today. Graduates have gone on to dance professionally with Orlando Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, The Royal Danish Ballet, and the Hamburg Ballet, as well other companies in major US cities.

The Orlando Ballet is also home to the Orlando Ballet School, one of the finest training academies in the world for dance. Classes are available for young and intermediate dancers. Orlando Ballet School classes begin with the Enrollment Division and progress to the Pre-Professional Division. Each level follows a structured syllabus that recognizes cognitive, emotional and physical development. Students aged three to six are placed by age while students aged seven and up are auditioned and placed by knowledge, ability and potential. All students receive bi-annual progress reports and are advanced only when the teaching team believes more advanced work will be beneficial to the student.

The dance studio for Orlando Ballet, along with props, costumes, and backdrops, are available for rent.
