Based on the same play that inspired Moulin Rouge!, Verdi’s opera La Traviata is one of the most famous of all time. Experience this timeless romantic opera, set in Paris during the Parisian renaissance of the 1920s. Cuban soprano Elizabeth Caballero portrays Violetta, an infamous Parisian socialite who longs for passion, but is deathly afraid of being consumed by it. Despite her fears, she falls deeply in love with young Alfredo. Their love affair is cut short by Alfredo’s father and Violetta’s frail health. Verdi’s soaring melodies reveal every nuance of their stormy and steamy liaison. Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
THE STORY & CHARACTERS
Cuban soprano Elizabeth Caballero portrays Violetta, an infamous Parisian socialite who longs for passion, but is deathly afraid of being consumed by it. Despite her fears, she falls deeply in love with the young painter Alfredo, played by American tenor Brian Jagde. Their love affair is cut short by Alfredo’s father and Violetta’s frail health. The duo is joined by 61 musicians, 40 choristers, and a cast and crew of over 100, who will be on and behind stage.
THE MUSIC
Perhaps most famous from La Traviata is the drinking song ”Libiamo ne’ lieti calici” (“Let’s drink from the joyful cup”), which Violetta and Alfredo sing when they first meet.
THE SETTING
In this fully staged production, you’ll see extravagant party scenes with 1920s costumes-tuxedos, tails, and cutaways for the men, and women dressed in shimmering sheaths and extravagant headpieces. And costume designer Bobbie Demme-San Fillipo has hidden historical character lookalikes in this fresh take on a timeless story…see if you spy artist Pablo Picasso, writer Ernest Hemingway, or actress Josephine Baker. The Orlando Philharmonic will be on stage, within swooping set pieces, with the action unfolding around them.
